How to Choose the Best Wireless Router For Your Need

ItemTitle

Wireless router is the main wireless devices needed, besides the modem, to build a wireless network environment in home or in the SOHO. Generally when you sign-up for a broadband internet connection from the ISP, the ISP provides you a modem which is connected direct to one computer in home either using USB port or NIC adapter. So if you want to build a wireless network, you need to buy a router or access point. How do you know which one is the best wireless router you need?

The term the best wireless router is relative; there are some factors you need to consider in deciding which router is the best for your need. If you have limited budget, you really need to consider the basic requirements which are the best for your need. For example, if you just want to share the broadband internet connection with couple of computers in the household, and other share documents and printer within the household, then you don't need to buy a high features router such as one which is designed specifically for gamers in mind.

There are many types of Wireless Routers at the marketplace you can purchase, but which one is the best? In selecting the wireless router; some people make the mistake of trying to find the best wireless router. Of course, that's a moving target as router get better and better with each new model introduction, but what you really need is The perfect router that is best for your need. So your target is not the best wireless router but the best for your need.

Best Wireless router for Internet sharing

Based on the "The perfect router that is best for your need" If you just want to build a wireless environment in home to share the internet connection, or just for the portability reason so you can browse the internet with your laptop everywhere within the house wirelessly, you just need an all-in-one device which combines the function of modem, router, and the wireless access point.

If you subscribe for ADSL internet from the ISP which includes the monthly charges for the modem, you can purchase all-in-one device which includes the ADSL modem with the price under 0 such as D-Link DSL-2640B, or you can consider Netgear DG834Gv5 - a DSL Wireless Modem with Wireless -G Router and built-in DSL Modem. Both are routers with built-in ADSL modem, including 4-port Switch LAN, wireless access point, and with router/firewall feature for security protection against the internet threats.

Both routers would be suitable for your home wireless environment to share the internet, share the files and printer with several computers in the household. All the requirements you need for building a wireless environment in home with this type of modem-router, a single device for all. This type of all-in-one device would be the perfect wireless router for your need. For Cable Internet, you can consider SBG-900 Cable modem router by Motorola.

Wireless Router for Gaming and HD Streaming

Still hold the principle of the perfect wireless router for your need, wireless router for gaming and HD media streaming demands high performance, fast, and reliable networks. Both Gaming and streaming HD video applications demand high-speed networks that capable of delivering high bandwidth-sensitive applications. They should be capable to intelligently manage and automatically prioritize network traffic to better execute bandwidth-sensitive applications including VoIP and multimedia applications. You need a wireless router which has QoS (Quality of Service) technology feature.

The fastest wireless network today is based on draft 2.0 802.11n standards. It is not finalized yet, but mostly the manufacturers have shipped their new lines of products using this draft version of 802.11n technology. This draft 802.11n (wireless -N) technology can deliver the speed of up to 300 Mbps (ideal condition, actual speed may vary) with enhanced technology specific to the manufacturers. They should also feature enhanced wireless technology for optimal range and connectivity such as MIMO technology. MIMO is a technology which uses multiple antennas to coherently resolve more information than possible using a single antenna.

The best wireless router for gaming and streaming HD media should be clear from the source of interference. Common source of radio interference is wireless devices which operate in the 2.4 GHz radio band such as cordless phone, baby monitor, microwave oven, home security and monitoring appliances, garage controller, and so on. Wireless 802.11b/g and draft 802.11n standards operate in 2.4 GHz radio band too. For a clear radio band, the wireless router should include the dual-band feature which can operate both in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (802.11a) radio bands either selectable or simultaneous. With dual-band, you can stream HD media as well as for gaming in a clear 5 GHz frequency band, less radio interference as in 2.4 GHz band. This will assure a jitter-free and lag-free wireless environment.

Example of the perfect wireless router for gaming and HD streaming is D-Link DGL-4500. DGL-4500 is specifically designed for gamers in mind. It is powered by award winning GameFuel technology which allows you to customize your network settings to prioritize game traffic so others will not hog all the bandwidth while downloading HD media.

Which is Faster Wireless Router Or Wired Internet?

ItemTitle

It is commonly known by data networking technicians that a wired network for Internet connectivity is faster than Internet connectivity from a wireless router. But what is not commonly known is why. A router is a device that is used to connect one network, such as the Internet, to a Local Area Network (LAN) that has several connected devices such as computers. Wired Local Area Networks commonly use the Ethernet protocol for data communications. This protocol generally has bandwidth speeds from 10Mb/s (megabits per second) to 1000Mb/s with 100Mb/s being the most commonly used for networking computers in most homes and offices. The Ethernet data communication protocol uses full-duplex communication; that is, it can send and receive data at the same time.

Internet Service Providers mostly offer high speed broadband services up to 1.5Mb/s which are defined in terms of the maximum download speed because several common consumer broadband technologies have a slower maximum upload speed.

A router as the name implies, distributes data packets from the Internet to each requesting computer connected to it. This is done in an orderly manner by using high speed electrical switches. The maximum rate at which the router can switch the data packets also determines the maximum speed of operation of the Local Area Network. If you have too many computers connected off the router, the router can become a speed bottleneck. So in theory, if you use a 100Mb/s Ethernet cable to connect to your Internet Service Provider, then your Internet connection will not slow down as most broadband Internet Services for home use peak out at around 1.5Mb/s, and business use peaks out at about 10Mb/s (but shared across many computers).

With wireless data networks, the most widely used protocol is the IEEE 802.11 standard. This standard has had many revisions over the past few years and the latest is the 802.11n version. The 802.11n version can in theory work up to 300Mb/s whereas the earlier 802.11b version works up to 11Mb/s and the 802.11g works up to 54Mb/s. But wireless routers only provide wireless data connectivity using a half-duplex protocol (either send or receive data but not both at same time) and this makes them slower than wired Ethernet connections. But there are a few other factors that make wireless networks slower than wired networks due to signal and data processing overheads. The wireless signal can be susceptible to local interference from other nearby electrical equipment and this can cause the performance of the wireless network to degrade. When the wireless signal degrades, the wireless router must perform more data error corrections to maintain the integrity of the data and this causes delays in distributing the data to and from its destination and slows down the connection.

If wireless security protocols are also used to encrypt the data, this requires additional data processing to be undertaken that can also limit the performance by introducing inherent latency delays. Hard-wired networks do not need to have the data packets encrypted because they are physically secured in most buildings whereas wireless networks cover areas that are not secured and hence the data needs to be encrypted to secure it from unauthorized users.

For better performance Internet connectivity, use a wired cable if you can because it is physically secure, allows faster performance, costs less, and is not as susceptible to electrical interference compared to wireless connectivity.

In summary, if you use your computer for gaming, voice over IP, or real-time collaboration, then you are better off using a wired cable network connection to the router that connects to the Internet Service Provider.

The article intends to provide information on resetting password in Linksys wireless router. The information contained in this article is reliable and correct to the date. It is still advised to follow the instructions carefully in order to reset password without any problem.

Linksys router is ranked among the most popular wireless router devices that provide excellent signal strength for wireless browsing, setting up network connection, or sharing a single connection on multiple computers. It often happens that users forget their username and/or password and have difficulty logging in to their router to customize features like password protecting wireless connection etc. Most of the users in such a situation contact their Linksys tech support for assistance. However, the password resetting is comparatively an easy task and can be done without the assistance of Linksys router support.

Instructions:

You will be required to hard reset your Linksys router to restore it to the default configuration settings. To do so, take a slim and sharp pin and push it inside the Reset button, located at the back of the router. Hold the button for 30 seconds and then release it by taking the pin out. The lights will flicker on the router and then come back steady. Thereafter, power cycle the router by taking the power cable out and plugging it back in. You can also use the power button on the router to power off and on instead of taking out the cable.

Once the router is hard reset and powered on, you will be required to reconfigure it. Connect your computer to one of the 4 Ethernet (LAN) ports of the Linksys router and power on both the devices. Ensure that all the lights are lit on the router and the Windows has loaded fully.

This will take you to the Linksys router login page. Check the login information for your router and enter the username and router. Newer Linksys models have default username and password set to 'admin' (without quotes and as is), whereas older models have default password set to 'admin' while the username is always blank. Wireless Networking - Router Vs Access Point

ItemTitle

While planning for your wireless network you might be asking what is the difference between a router and an access point. You need to think of a router as more of a server because it performs many functions like a server. An access point only provides a portal for wireless client to connect to your existing LAN.

Routers can perform many functions. Routers can connect many different WLANs together acting like a traffic cop. Routers also act as a DHCP server. A DHCP server assigns dynamic IP address to your computer every time your computer starts up. If you don't have a DHCP server then you will have to assign each computer on your network a permanent IP address.

As I have said before your router can also act like a traffic cop. You can use a router to perform port forwarding to certain computers on your LAN. For example you can direct all internet traffic looking for your game server's port number to a specific computer on your LAN.

The ability to connect multiple computers to the internet is one of the main features of a router. The router is assigned one WAN IP address from your ISP. This IP address is called a public IP address that everyone on the internet can see. Because you have multiple computers connected to your router the router uses a protocol called NAT Network address translation NAT will assign the computers that are behind your routers IP address, private IP addresses. NAT acts as a firewall because computers on the internet cannot in theory even see your computers. They will only see the IP address of your router. NAT does block traffic from reaching your computers but it will not block Trojans from going out to the internet. That is why I do recommend installing a firewall on your LAN computers.

The role of an access point on a LAN is to give the wireless user a door way to enter. The more people that enter the door at the same time the slower they will go. 802.11b access points say they will give you a through put rate of 11mps but the actual rate is around 5MPS. 802.11g has a rating of 54mbps with an actual through put of 20mbps. The access points do have most of the same security features as a router such as WEP, WPA, 8021x and TKPI but they will not have the traffic cop functions like a router. Also the access points will not have NAT which would add an unnecessary layer to your network. To keep it simple access points just simulate plugging in your laptop to a port in the wall and that's it.A router is used on the border of you network to act as a traffic cop deciding who can come in and blocking those you want to keep out.

How to Connect a USB Modem Wireless Router Ethernet

ItemTitle

I currently have a USB broadband modem. I purchased a wireless router which has ethernet connections. Currently, the modem is plugged into my computer downstairs which is running Windows 98, therefore, it won't bridge the connections to my computer upstairs(XP). I can't update to XP because a family member wont 'risk' it.

Can I connect the USB broadband modem to my wireless router using a complicated selection of cable adapters ie ethernet to USB (I cant find a USB TO ETHERNET adapter). If this is not possible, if I plug the USB modem into my XP computer, can I bridge the connections to my Win 98 computer using the XP computer as the host?

I think their is Ethernet to USB out their currently but not USB to ethernet. I dont see any reason why you should not be able to hook up your USB modem to your XP computer and use it as a bridge to the 98 computer.

Of course, it would be nicer to have an all-in-one unit, but you can accomplish your goal with this equipment. You cannot use cable adapters to convert the modem's USB into Ethernet. USB needs drivers to operate, and Ethernet connections do not provide those drivers to the device. you could also connect the modem to the XP machine and bridge connections, yes. but you can leave the system the way it is and configure it to run smoothly like this:

If I had the hardwear in front of me, it would be easier to provide specifics... but i can probly give you an idea of what to do. There are only 2 steps here:

1. configure an internet gateway.

2. configure the router.

And the rest is easy.

1. Set up the internet machine to SHARE AN INTERNET CONNECTION (you can use the wizard if you want, or just enable Internet Connection Sharing), which will turn the 98 into an internet gateway. that gateway needs an IP address designated, however. In essence, the 98 machine will be the internet server, so the IP of the 98 machine is the IP of the gateway. Assign an address, for example: 192.168.1.1 to the 98 machine. the "192.168" is important, and the last strings you can stretch on, but for the sake of ease lets keep it small. *TIP* the subnet mask will always be 255.255.255.0. okay that takes care of the host machine.

2. after you have an internet gateway, connect the wireless router, and console (or IP) in to the settings, usually by going into internet explorer and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, and look for a slot for Internet Gateway. Type the address assigned in step 1. thats that for the router. (there may be other settings necessary for your specific network, and if there are, be sure to configure those.)

Lastly a few housekeeping tasks. make sure the workgroup for both machines is identical. I usually use MSHOME as the workgroup. Also make sure that on the XP machine, your IP address is set to "Automatically Obtain IP address", also known as DHCP.
