How to Choose the Best Wireless Router For Your Need

ItemTitle

Wireless router is the main wireless devices needed, besides the modem, to build a wireless network environment in home or in the SOHO. Generally when you sign-up for a broadband internet connection from the ISP, the ISP provides you a modem which is connected direct to one computer in home either using USB port or NIC adapter. So if you want to build a wireless network, you need to buy a router or access point. How do you know which one is the best wireless router you need?

The term the best wireless router is relative; there are some factors you need to consider in deciding which router is the best for your need. If you have limited budget, you really need to consider the basic requirements which are the best for your need. For example, if you just want to share the broadband internet connection with couple of computers in the household, and other share documents and printer within the household, then you don't need to buy a high features router such as one which is designed specifically for gamers in mind.

There are many types of Wireless Routers at the marketplace you can purchase, but which one is the best? In selecting the wireless router; some people make the mistake of trying to find the best wireless router. Of course, that's a moving target as router get better and better with each new model introduction, but what you really need is The perfect router that is best for your need. So your target is not the best wireless router but the best for your need.

Best Wireless router for Internet sharing

Based on the "The perfect router that is best for your need" If you just want to build a wireless environment in home to share the internet connection, or just for the portability reason so you can browse the internet with your laptop everywhere within the house wirelessly, you just need an all-in-one device which combines the function of modem, router, and the wireless access point.

If you subscribe for ADSL internet from the ISP which includes the monthly charges for the modem, you can purchase all-in-one device which includes the ADSL modem with the price under 0 such as D-Link DSL-2640B, or you can consider Netgear DG834Gv5 - a DSL Wireless Modem with Wireless -G Router and built-in DSL Modem. Both are routers with built-in ADSL modem, including 4-port Switch LAN, wireless access point, and with router/firewall feature for security protection against the internet threats.

Both routers would be suitable for your home wireless environment to share the internet, share the files and printer with several computers in the household. All the requirements you need for building a wireless environment in home with this type of modem-router, a single device for all. This type of all-in-one device would be the perfect wireless router for your need. For Cable Internet, you can consider SBG-900 Cable modem router by Motorola.

Wireless Router for Gaming and HD Streaming

Still hold the principle of the perfect wireless router for your need, wireless router for gaming and HD media streaming demands high performance, fast, and reliable networks. Both Gaming and streaming HD video applications demand high-speed networks that capable of delivering high bandwidth-sensitive applications. They should be capable to intelligently manage and automatically prioritize network traffic to better execute bandwidth-sensitive applications including VoIP and multimedia applications. You need a wireless router which has QoS (Quality of Service) technology feature.

The fastest wireless network today is based on draft 2.0 802.11n standards. It is not finalized yet, but mostly the manufacturers have shipped their new lines of products using this draft version of 802.11n technology. This draft 802.11n (wireless -N) technology can deliver the speed of up to 300 Mbps (ideal condition, actual speed may vary) with enhanced technology specific to the manufacturers. They should also feature enhanced wireless technology for optimal range and connectivity such as MIMO technology. MIMO is a technology which uses multiple antennas to coherently resolve more information than possible using a single antenna.

The best wireless router for gaming and streaming HD media should be clear from the source of interference. Common source of radio interference is wireless devices which operate in the 2.4 GHz radio band such as cordless phone, baby monitor, microwave oven, home security and monitoring appliances, garage controller, and so on. Wireless 802.11b/g and draft 802.11n standards operate in 2.4 GHz radio band too. For a clear radio band, the wireless router should include the dual-band feature which can operate both in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (802.11a) radio bands either selectable or simultaneous. With dual-band, you can stream HD media as well as for gaming in a clear 5 GHz frequency band, less radio interference as in 2.4 GHz band. This will assure a jitter-free and lag-free wireless environment.

Example of the perfect wireless router for gaming and HD streaming is D-Link DGL-4500. DGL-4500 is specifically designed for gamers in mind. It is powered by award winning GameFuel technology which allows you to customize your network settings to prioritize game traffic so others will not hog all the bandwidth while downloading HD media.

Which is Faster Wireless Router Or Wired Internet?

ItemTitle

It is commonly known by data networking technicians that a wired network for Internet connectivity is faster than Internet connectivity from a wireless router. But what is not commonly known is why. A router is a device that is used to connect one network, such as the Internet, to a Local Area Network (LAN) that has several connected devices such as computers. Wired Local Area Networks commonly use the Ethernet protocol for data communications. This protocol generally has bandwidth speeds from 10Mb/s (megabits per second) to 1000Mb/s with 100Mb/s being the most commonly used for networking computers in most homes and offices. The Ethernet data communication protocol uses full-duplex communication; that is, it can send and receive data at the same time.

Internet Service Providers mostly offer high speed broadband services up to 1.5Mb/s which are defined in terms of the maximum download speed because several common consumer broadband technologies have a slower maximum upload speed.

A router as the name implies, distributes data packets from the Internet to each requesting computer connected to it. This is done in an orderly manner by using high speed electrical switches. The maximum rate at which the router can switch the data packets also determines the maximum speed of operation of the Local Area Network. If you have too many computers connected off the router, the router can become a speed bottleneck. So in theory, if you use a 100Mb/s Ethernet cable to connect to your Internet Service Provider, then your Internet connection will not slow down as most broadband Internet Services for home use peak out at around 1.5Mb/s, and business use peaks out at about 10Mb/s (but shared across many computers).

With wireless data networks, the most widely used protocol is the IEEE 802.11 standard. This standard has had many revisions over the past few years and the latest is the 802.11n version. The 802.11n version can in theory work up to 300Mb/s whereas the earlier 802.11b version works up to 11Mb/s and the 802.11g works up to 54Mb/s. But wireless routers only provide wireless data connectivity using a half-duplex protocol (either send or receive data but not both at same time) and this makes them slower than wired Ethernet connections. But there are a few other factors that make wireless networks slower than wired networks due to signal and data processing overheads. The wireless signal can be susceptible to local interference from other nearby electrical equipment and this can cause the performance of the wireless network to degrade. When the wireless signal degrades, the wireless router must perform more data error corrections to maintain the integrity of the data and this causes delays in distributing the data to and from its destination and slows down the connection.

If wireless security protocols are also used to encrypt the data, this requires additional data processing to be undertaken that can also limit the performance by introducing inherent latency delays. Hard-wired networks do not need to have the data packets encrypted because they are physically secured in most buildings whereas wireless networks cover areas that are not secured and hence the data needs to be encrypted to secure it from unauthorized users.

For better performance Internet connectivity, use a wired cable if you can because it is physically secure, allows faster performance, costs less, and is not as susceptible to electrical interference compared to wireless connectivity.

In summary, if you use your computer for gaming, voice over IP, or real-time collaboration, then you are better off using a wired cable network connection to the router that connects to the Internet Service Provider.

Wireless Networking - Router Vs Access Point

ItemTitle

While planning for your wireless network you might be asking what is the difference between a router and an access point. You need to think of a router as more of a server because it performs many functions like a server. An access point only provides a portal for wireless client to connect to your existing LAN.

Routers can perform many functions. Routers can connect many different WLANs together acting like a traffic cop. Routers also act as a DHCP server. A DHCP server assigns dynamic IP address to your computer every time your computer starts up. If you don't have a DHCP server then you will have to assign each computer on your network a permanent IP address.

As I have said before your router can also act like a traffic cop. You can use a router to perform port forwarding to certain computers on your LAN. For example you can direct all internet traffic looking for your game server's port number to a specific computer on your LAN.

The ability to connect multiple computers to the internet is one of the main features of a router. The router is assigned one WAN IP address from your ISP. This IP address is called a public IP address that everyone on the internet can see. Because you have multiple computers connected to your router the router uses a protocol called NAT Network address translation NAT will assign the computers that are behind your routers IP address, private IP addresses. NAT acts as a firewall because computers on the internet cannot in theory even see your computers. They will only see the IP address of your router. NAT does block traffic from reaching your computers but it will not block Trojans from going out to the internet. That is why I do recommend installing a firewall on your LAN computers.

The role of an access point on a LAN is to give the wireless user a door way to enter. The more people that enter the door at the same time the slower they will go. 802.11b access points say they will give you a through put rate of 11mps but the actual rate is around 5MPS. 802.11g has a rating of 54mbps with an actual through put of 20mbps. The access points do have most of the same security features as a router such as WEP, WPA, 8021x and TKPI but they will not have the traffic cop functions like a router. Also the access points will not have NAT which would add an unnecessary layer to your network. To keep it simple access points just simulate plugging in your laptop to a port in the wall and that's it.A router is used on the border of you network to act as a traffic cop deciding who can come in and blocking those you want to keep out.

How to Connect a USB Modem Wireless Router Ethernet

ItemTitle

I currently have a USB broadband modem. I purchased a wireless router which has ethernet connections. Currently, the modem is plugged into my computer downstairs which is running Windows 98, therefore, it won't bridge the connections to my computer upstairs(XP). I can't update to XP because a family member wont 'risk' it.

Can I connect the USB broadband modem to my wireless router using a complicated selection of cable adapters ie ethernet to USB (I cant find a USB TO ETHERNET adapter). If this is not possible, if I plug the USB modem into my XP computer, can I bridge the connections to my Win 98 computer using the XP computer as the host?

I think their is Ethernet to USB out their currently but not USB to ethernet. I dont see any reason why you should not be able to hook up your USB modem to your XP computer and use it as a bridge to the 98 computer.

Of course, it would be nicer to have an all-in-one unit, but you can accomplish your goal with this equipment. You cannot use cable adapters to convert the modem's USB into Ethernet. USB needs drivers to operate, and Ethernet connections do not provide those drivers to the device. you could also connect the modem to the XP machine and bridge connections, yes. but you can leave the system the way it is and configure it to run smoothly like this:

If I had the hardwear in front of me, it would be easier to provide specifics... but i can probly give you an idea of what to do. There are only 2 steps here:

1. configure an internet gateway.

2. configure the router.

And the rest is easy.

1. Set up the internet machine to SHARE AN INTERNET CONNECTION (you can use the wizard if you want, or just enable Internet Connection Sharing), which will turn the 98 into an internet gateway. that gateway needs an IP address designated, however. In essence, the 98 machine will be the internet server, so the IP of the 98 machine is the IP of the gateway. Assign an address, for example: 192.168.1.1 to the 98 machine. the "192.168" is important, and the last strings you can stretch on, but for the sake of ease lets keep it small. *TIP* the subnet mask will always be 255.255.255.0. okay that takes care of the host machine.

2. after you have an internet gateway, connect the wireless router, and console (or IP) in to the settings, usually by going into internet explorer and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, and look for a slot for Internet Gateway. Type the address assigned in step 1. thats that for the router. (there may be other settings necessary for your specific network, and if there are, be sure to configure those.)

Lastly a few housekeeping tasks. make sure the workgroup for both machines is identical. I usually use MSHOME as the workgroup. Also make sure that on the XP machine, your IP address is set to "Automatically Obtain IP address", also known as DHCP.

Lock Your Router and Keep People Out

Lock Your Router and Keep People Out

Many of us will put in our own wireless routers and if we can link to the Internet without any troubles we think the Job is completed. If you don't mind other people feeding off your connection and having access to information on your Computers than you are done. However, most of us would rather we kept our connection safe. The only way to do this is to lock the wireless router.

You need to connect to your Computer to the yellow ports using the cable. It is better to link directly to the modem so that your Computer is not able to be accessed before you can lock it.

Now access the settings page for the router. Open the Internet browser and type in your routers adDress. The number is able to be found in the network connections in Windows. Right click on the Internet connection, click status, now click on the support tab. The number must look like this 123.456.7.8.

Once you have typed in the adDress you will be able to be asked to login. Only your producer instruction manual or the web site for the producer has the ability to assist you with this.

Find the wireless security settings on the setup screen. Click on the wireless security tab.

You should find out that the security settings have been disabled. Look at the choices to see the unique types that you have the ability to select from. Numerous people will use WPA. This will allow you to enter a password so that you can access your wireless connection. The password might be saved to the settings so that you do not have to keep having to type it in.

Enter a strong password you want to utilize and press enter and save. Your wireless network connection has now been locked and password protected.

TDM-C500 ADSL2 Modem Router Connects to Wireless Router or Access Point?

TDM-C500 ADSL2 Modem Router Connects to Wireless Router or Access Point?

Some people make mistakes in purchasing the wireless access point (AP) to create a wireless network in home and share the broadband ADSL internet connection with many client Computers within the household. They don't realize that what they currently have in home is a modem (without the routing / NAT function). When the wireless AP connects to this modem, it creates a wireless LAN but only one client Computer can access the internet at the same time. Why? The modem doesn't include the NAT function.

The NAT (Network AdDress Translation) is a fundaMental feature of the routers which is to translate and map an IP adDress or more to one or more IP adDress in different networks. Typically in home router, the NAT feature is used to map a single public IP address provided by your ISP to one or more private IP addresses behind the router (which is your internal network). In case that you have already purchased a wireless access point and your client computers cannot share the internet, your modem doesn't include the NAT feature. What you need is a modem with router function such as TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router.

TDM-C500 is an ADSL2 modem with router function. The modem includes the dual firewall features - the NAT and SPI (stateful packet inspection). The NAT feature helps you hide your internal network from the wild internet and to share your ADSL broadband internet connection with many computers in the network.

TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router include one 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 port you can use to connect the wireless access point such as TEW-690AP N450 Wireless Access Point should you need to expand the network wirelessly. Since this TDM-C500 modem includes the router function, you don't need a wireless router for creating wireless network, just connect a wireless access point to share the broadband internet connection.

There are some wireless routers that can be switched to access point mode such as WZR-HP-G300NH Buffalo Nfiniti Wireless-N Router & Access Point. It includes external switch to change between router and access point modes. Some router manufacturers provide guidelines in connecting the router to another router (including this ADSL2 modem router) such as disabling the DHCP server, disabling the UPnP, and modifying the IP address that is in the same subnet with your current network.

Or you can connect the modem direct to the Switch should you need to expand the wired connections to the internet. The good thing with this TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router is that it includes the DHCP server. With the DHCP server, you don't need to provide the static IP address manually to all of the client computers in the network. This will reduce the complexity of IP address administration.

Alternate Solution

The TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router provides you the flexibility in choosing the wireless access point to create a wireless network in homes or in offices. You can connect the outdoor wireless access point (such as TL-WA5210G High Power Wireless Outdoor CPE) to provide wireless internet access for client computers in harsh outdoor environMent. This is typically suitable for site projects with many computer clients separated hundreds of Meters from the main site.

For home environMents where internet access and other wireless networking tasks are required, instead of purchasing separate TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router plus wireless access point device you can consider purchasing the all-in-one device which includes all the requirements for building a wireless LAN. For example, TEW-635BRM TRENDnet 300Mbps wireless N ADSL2/2+ modem router. TEW-635BRM includes build-in ADSL modem plus wireless router in a single device. Or you can consider DGND3300 V2 N300 RangeMax dual band ADSL wireless modem. Both ADSL modem wireless routers are designed with 802.11n technology, but DGND3300 supports the simultaneous dual band technology to work both in 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands in the same time.

TRENDnet TDM-C500 is an ADSL2 modem router - a modem with build-in high speed router function to share the ADSL broadband internet connection with many computers in homes or offices. You need to connect a wireless access point device to create a wireless network.

Default Router Address (1921681254)

Default Router Address (1921681254)

It is an IPv4 adDress and is mostly used as a default IP adDress for many ADSL and cable modems or routers. The major routers and modems which use 192.168.1.254 as a default IP include Westell ADSL modems and Cayman/Motorola Netopia internet gateways, Thompson ADSL routers, some TP-Link routers, Alcatel ADSL modems, 3Com routers, SRW2023 Linksys switches, and ADSL Billion routers.

Following are given answers of some of the important questions from the users related to IP.

What is the Common Usage of 192.168.1.254 IP?

We have explained earlier that it is the private IP for large number of different modems and routers. However, you can use this IP adDress in your local network also, but before that make sure that network is not connected to any other router using the same IP. In that case you will have to face the IP conflict issue.

Why is 192.168.1.254 a Private IP AdDress?

It is called private IP address because it fits into the IP range reserved by IANA as a private range. It is usually done to avoid the lack of availability of IP address.

Can I change IP of My Router?

Default IP is installed on routers and modems by manufacturers, such as 192.168.1.254. Yes, you can change the default IP to any other required address. For this check the user manual you have got with your router for instructions.

I can't Access to My Router at 192.168.1.254. What can I do?

There can be many reasons for this and you have to look out for them. First check the 192.168.1.254 private IP address of your router. Check the cables or any other network drivers for possible damage. Check the whether your local area connection is configured properly or not. There can be anything which has to find out before contacting any technical support or your network administrator. Following are given few more things which you should try before calling in for help.

- In case you have a wireless router, make sure signals are strong and stable.
- Check your router settings, you may accidentally changed them.
- Make sure your firewall settings right.
- Try to reset your router.
- Did you configure TELNET or SSH on your router.
- Make sure that you have typed IP address is right, i.e. 192.168.1.254
- Try to reset your local area connection.
- Try to reset your Computer.
- Make sure that the cables between your Computer and router are properly connected.
- Make sure that the connectors on cables between your computer and router are properly connected and in good condition.
- Make sure that if your router has a switch it should be in good condition. Any broken switch can disrupt the enTire network. Remove the broken switch and try again.

If all these things failed then there is chance that your router has malfunction. Better to call for technical help before reaching to any decision.

Linksys Wireless Router WRT54GL

Linksys Wireless Router WRT54GL

Check the pros and cons of Linksys wireless router WRT54GL - Titan of Work.

If you are a Wi-Fi amateur, you may find yourself in Router Jungle. There are a lot of routers out there, some with instructions that don't provide a step-by-step guide, some with cheap hardware solutions and it's not hard to be overcharged for your average router.

To avoid those problems I've recomMend Linksys family and WRT54GL Linksys router for your first home and small business wireless router. For me it's Titan of Work - it's just a little device, but it's very powerful.

First of all, this Linksys wireless router can use both wired and wireless links, so you can share internet as you wish. WRT54GL have four Ethernet slots and can handle up to 255 wireless devices in your area. In other words - you can build your custom network with your PC, notebook, workstation on LAN, and a Wi-Fi game console hook up.

Your Wi-Fi signal has also better quality, because of two antennas that are in box with WRT54GL Linksys router. That means you don't have to worry that those thick walls in your apartMent will cause more distractions. This Linksys wireless router will handle most of it. Of course, it also has its own limitations, but most other routers have only one Wi-Fi antenna and their signal isn't as good as this one.

The setup is one of the most user-friendly out there. Complete step-by-step installation manual will help you configure all options you need to set up. This router has also a backup program, in case you will have to hard reset router and configure it again. Just resend that configure file to router and it will work again.

This Linksys router, is running on Linux firmware and working on 802.11 b and g standard. It supports WPA, WPA2 and the older WEP encryption types. In addition, it has a built-in MAC adDress Filtering, Quality of Service tool, Universal Plug-and-Play for your programs and games ports, firewall, and supports access policies (such as "don't allow Deny's Computer to connect via FTP on Mondays").

Speaking of Quality of Service tool, this Linksys wireless router have really good built-in program. Most of modern house have more than one device that use your Linksys router to connect to internet. Your PC, notebook, game console, mobile phone, sometimes even a TV. You know what will happen if you connect all of those devices into non-QoS router? Disaster! All your devices want to use most of your internet transfer and it will end by flooding your Linksys router.

Linksys wireless router WRT54GL has Quality of Service option. You can Plug-in all your devices and specify which device needs more of your internet transfer and which needs less. It's very convenient and helps a lot for long-term using Linksys router.

In conclusion, this router has one of the best comparison quality/price. You can plug it into your ADSL modem and create a custom network in just few steps. It's one of easiest to configure, and one of the most stable out there. Maybe it is the best solution for home and small business.

Pros:
- Stable, long-term working,
- Supports QoS,
- Easy setup
- Plenty of customization options
- Top quality signal via two antennas

Cons:
- Out of date body design

Linksys E3000 Router - An Upgraded Form of the Dual-Band Beast

Linksys E3000 Router - An Upgraded Form of the Dual-Band Beast

The new heir to the Cisco throne is finally out. The Linksys E3000 router has arrived and is here to dominate other 3rd Party router manufacturers. This is a minor upgrade from the WRT160N model but in the end it is still a fierce beast.

Linksys has already ceased the old model number trending and started with the new E-series. Instead of having the model number start with "WRT", you will now see router models that start with "E". The E3000 router may have the previous design of its predecessors but you will notice that the sleek blue and black body appears without an antennae on it. It definitely looks great in a personal office or living room.

The Linksys E3000 may be a minor upgrade from the WRT160N but it has some major exceptions. This router is capable of handling transfer speeds of up to 300Mbps. It also has dual band wireless-N for seamless wireless connectivity, and a 4-Gigabit Ethernet port for Faster hardwired connections. Moreover, it has a USB port for 'Universal Plug n' Play (UPnP) media streaming and file sharing options.

The router is easier to set up using the new software that comes with it. It is somehow similar to Cisco's new Valet router which is also one of the easiest and Fastest to setup. The E-series has a decent graphic user interface (GUI). Configuring this new router has become effortless compared to the old Linksys interface, as it lets you manage the basic security settings easily.

This E3000 router can serve as a "Universal Plug N' Play" (UPnP) media server. It has a USB port for added purposes like file transfer which is very useful. It also lets you stream media from whatever storage device is Plugged in to the USB port of the router. This router can serve as a network drive, allowing you to also add and remove files using the system's own file browser. Transferring a 1.5 GB file using this router may take approximately nine minutes to complete, which is good. However, working out the UPnP feature of this router can be a little confusing as the graphic user interface (GUI) does not extend to this particular function.

As for the wireless range, the E3000's definition of a dual band router does not fail to reach the user's expectations. It can operate at both 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz. This is absolutely a router that can broadcast at both frequencies, where you can benefit from both speed and range. Having the wireless N technology, it connects Computers with a stable and fast connection. The dual band status can connect through the standard 2.4GHz or the 5GHz, adjusting to the interferences that exist in the area. At 5GHz you can stream movies without any interruptions.

The E3000's dual band feature was tested and was proven to get good wireless signal strength, even at the worst point of access.

The Linksys E3000 router's features are very remarkable. While some of its features are common, this router makes the distinction of having a better wireless range and quality concurrent with its UPnP feature. If you need a router that has dual band and a media sharing or file transfer features to come with it, this is the router for you.

7 Easy Steps to Secure Your Wireless Router

7 Easy Steps to Secure Your Wireless Router

Accessing Your Wireless Router's Configuration

To gain access to your wireless router settings and configuration Menu then connect to the router either wirelessly or via a Ethernet cable. Open a web browser and type either:

[http://192.168.1.1] or[http://192.168.2.1]1) Change Admin password

Most wireless routers ship with a blank password. It is essential that this is changed else a potential hacker could get into your router configuration and lock you out of your own hardware.

2) Change The Network Name (otherwise known as the SSID)

The default network name is usually made up of the name/model of your wireless router. This information gives a head start for a hacker and makes it easier for them to break into your network. Don't rename it to something like your surname or house name as this unnecessarily exposes personal information. Rename it to an alpha-numeric string - this can be up to 32 characters long.

3) Turn off SSID broadcasting

By default, a wireless router's SSID is broadcast so anyone in the vicinity of your wireless router can see that it. SSID broadcasting can be turned off thus making your wireless router virtually invisible.

4) Enabling Encryption

This is switched off by default. There is a choice of WEP, WPA and WPA2. Currently the latest encryption method is WPA2 so use this where possible. Both your wireless router and wireless PC adaptor must be configured to use the same encryption.

5) Mac AdDress Control

All hardware has a unique MAC adDress associated with it, including your PC adaptor card. This MAC address can be added to access control list in the wireless router. Only devices added to the router's access control list are allowed to be connected.

6) Update router firmware

It is recomMended that the latest router firmware is downloaded from the manufacturer's website and installed in the router. This will hopefully fix any bugs that have been found for your router and also help with any known security flaws in the router itself.

7) Backup settings

Finally, backup all router settings. If you reset the router back to its factory default settings for whatever reason, your configuration can later be easily and quickly restored back into the router.

How to Connect Your Printer to Your Wireless Router

How to Connect Your Printer to Your Wireless Router

One of the benefits of using a wireless router is its ability to connect to different devices. Your Computers are connected. You can share files with the other Computers. However, your Computers are not the only ones that can be connected. You can also connect your other computing devices such as your printer. If you connect this to your router, you can access your printer even when it is not directly connected to your Computer.

The following are the steps you should use when hooking up your printer to your wireless router:

Step 1: Buy an Ethernet cable. Usually, there are Ethernet cables included when you buy your router. You can insert these cables on the array of slots separated from the WAN slot. Connect one end to the router and connect the other end to your printer. But make sure your computer also has an Ethernet port. The older versions of printers do not have this slot. There are also some printers that can be connected with a USB cable. If your router has a USB port, you can use this cable.

Step 2: To make sure that it has been properly connected, you should re-run the printer installation disc. You can choose there the Network option where you can configure its networking settings.

Step 3: Press your printer on. Go to your computer and click the Start Menu. Go to the control panel of your computer. Find the icon for the "network and sharing" and then double click it. A screen will appear. Find the icon for "view computers and devices" and then double click it.

Step 4: If you used the USB cable to connect your printer, you can configure the settings by going to the Smart Menu of your computer and selecting the control panel option. Click "Printers" and then click the "Add Printer" icon. Configure the network by clicking "Add A Network Printer". A series of instructions will follow.

Step 5: Test it by printing a test page. You can test the connectivity from all the computers in your local area connection.

The computers in your home can now connect to the printer. Just make sure your printer is open if you are trying to access it. Otherwise, your pc will not really connect to it.

So follow these simple steps if you are having a bit of difficulty hooking up your printing device to your router. Maximize the use of your router today.

Wireless Printer Router - A Best Saving Device

Wireless Printer Router - A Best Saving Device

If you live in a home with a number of Computers or work in an office with several workstations, you might want to consider saving time and money by using a wireless printer router.  Instead of purchasing multiple printers for each of your Computers at home, a wireless printer router is intended to share one printer for your enTire network.  This will not only save you from buying unnecessary printing machines, but will also work as a space-saving device.

One of the ways of configuring this type of devise is the setting up of a printer server in your network using the main Wi-Fi gateway.  The printer and the server are connected by a wire or cable, which restricts the position of the printer.  However, this configuration is only advisable if the computers used in a network run identical operating system.  Otherwise, if there are computers with a different operating system, it is possible that the configuration of the printer will not work for each and every computer linked up with one network.

But the usual manner of configuration used by many is the printer sharing.  In this configuration, one computer is assigned to do the printing Jobs, while the other computers on the network freely send printing Jobs to the computer host which automatically puts the jobs in queue.  Like the first option, this approach also uses a cable linking the printer and the computer host, which likewise restricts the position of the printer.

The most convenient and suitable configuration of a wireless printer router is that which uses a wireless printer.  This is the most expedient among the available options as it does not limit the positioning of the printer.  This is because a cable or wire is not needed to make the connection.  With this feature, you are free to place the printer wherever you want, so long as it is within the coverage of your wireless internet.

If you are looking for the convenience and affordability of a device which is not only functional to your everyday needs but also economical because it saves you from buying multiple printers, then try the wireless printer router.  It is user-friendly and can be installed in 20 minutes or less.  Upon installation of the router, the configuration may now be set up from any computer in the network.  A CD provided with the kit will assist you to these configurations.

Linksys Wireless Broadband Router - How to Protect Your Network

Linksys Wireless Broadband Router - How to Protect Your Network

If you have purchased a Linksys wireless broadband router, that means that you have installed one of the most reliable and secure devices out there. Should you sit back and do nothing at this point? No, and in fact, if you do not take measures to protect your network, it could fall victim to those outside of it that would love to get in and have access to your personal information.

It is important to note that using a Linksys wireless router is not a problem, so long as you can ensure that the network has protection. The following tips will help you to protect your network from any form of invasion.

1. Be sure to change the Linksys admin password. This password is preset at the factory but that does not mean that it should stay that way. It takes a few minutes to change it in the administrator login.

2. Change the default SSID, or Service Set Identifier. This too is set by the factor. It is the name of your network. It can be up to 32 characters in length. If someone is trying to get into your network, and they know your SSID, they can get in. Be unique to ensure others will not know this information.

3. Encryption will also help you. Enable WPA encryption on your Linksys wireless broadband router. It will protect data transmitted over your network. Enable the highest level of encryption that is possible and supported by your network.

4. Get rid of the SSID broadcast. The next thing to do to protect your network is to disable the SSID broadcast that is the default setting for the system. Unless you want everyone to be able to use your connection, simply set this to be off.

5. Do enable MAC adDress Filtering on your router. Linksys allows you to do this. This process allows you to choose which of the Computers or devices will have access to your network.

Although there are numerous steps that you can take to protect each one of your Computers, when you link them together through a router, it is more important to focus on the enTire network rather than just one eleMent. Therefore, protect your Linksys wireless broadband router by setting up the previously Mentioned security features that can all be accessed through the administrator login. It is important to keep your system protected for the long term.

Installing Linux on WRT54g Wireless Router

Installing Linux on WRT54g Wireless Router

The WRT54G is a wireless router made by linksys. A few years ago linksys released its WRT54G firmware source code giving the open source community the ability to make its own versions.

Installing Linux on your wireless router has many benefits and in my opinion few risks. The one risk you do face is turning your router into a "Brick". Now, this does seem like a big chance to take but there are many options if upgrade fails. Also, if you follow the installation instructions for each wrt54g firmware distribution you won't have a problem.

Typical ways to "Brick" your wrt54g router are: trying to install your firmware upgrade over a wireless connection, interrupting the upgrade, and finally powering cycling during or five minutes after the upgrade.

General rules to follow are:

1. Always perform an upgrade from the original wrt54g linksys firmware not other firmware distributions.

2. Set your firmware back to factory defaults.

3. Don't upgrade from a wireless connection.

4. Don't turn off your router for about five minutes after the upgrade.

5. Insure your firmware is meant for your router, some firmware versions are meant for the WRT54GS (WRT54G with speed booster), and the regular wrt54g.

6. Follow the given instructions for each given firmware distribution.

7. Enable the Boot_wait function on your router. This option will give you the ability recover from a failed upgrade by using tftp to upload new firmware.

Linksys does have tools to that will let you recover from failed distributions. There are many different wrt54g firmware distrobutions to pick from. Some have specific purposes: like being used for a wireless hotspot or a radius server. Do your research before installing and always follow the exact installation instructions.

Wireless Routers: Features of DLinks DI-634M MIMO Wireless Router

Wireless Routers: Features of DLinks DI-634M MIMO Wireless Router

If you are interested in purchasing a new wireless router you should consider DLINK's DI-634M. Many wireless routers such as the Linksys WRT54g have been on the market for many years which lack the speed and coverage of newer MIMO enabled routers.
Features:

MIMO - MIMO stands for (MULTI in MULTI out), this enables to the router to transmit and receive twice as Fast as a non- MIMO router. MIMO technology will be a part of the new 802.11n standard that is being worked out by the IEEE. MIMO technology is also in Wi -MAX routers as also. MIMO does not give your router the ability to cover vast amount of larger areas by it will improve your signal quality and speed of transmission. Still in an average size house you will be able to receive an outstanding signal any where in your home, baseMent or even the backyard with proper placeMent.

Wireless Antennas - These antennas are not just your ordinary rubber duck antennas. They are actually four antennas two vertical and two horizontal. Four antennas sending out a blazing Fast speed spread evenly on all directions.

VOIP - This router was designed to handle VOIP. Many router state that VOIP will work on their router but the DI-634M blows them away. The biggest reason to VOIP is to save a ton off your phone bill. I was paying a month through the phone company and now use VOIP and pay only . I've tried using VOIP with many other wireless routers but the bandwidth is used up.

Security - Security features for this router include:

1.MAC adDress Filtering - Limits only the Computers you want or don't want to access the network

2.WEP,WPA,WPA2 - WPA2 is the highest form of wireless security out their for wireless routers. WEP is a weaker form of security with flaw due to it's reuse of encryption keys. WPA2 rotates the keys which doesn't let the cracker hack your system.

3.TKIP - Encryption is in conjunction with WPA2, if your gamming you will wan't to use TKIP because AES does use more bandwidth.

4.AES (Advanced encryption standard) - Holy crap you need like five degrees and 30 Computers to crack this form of encryption. THe only draw back is that all users might not be compatible with it, also it does slow down the network some.

QOS- Quality of Services is all about regulation how much bandwidth each application uses. You don't want lime wire or kazzaa eating up all your bandwidth when your trying to purchase Steelers tickets. So, when you are sharing your internet connection with multiple users you can limit how much their file sharing software eats up. Also you may want to dedicate more bandwidth to gamming programs.

VPN - Setting up a VPN server to your home network or an SSH server is a must. IF you ever need to get around a firewall or proxy server you will need a remote connection. DLINks DI-634M will work with a VPN.

The DLINK DI-634M has all the features you should be looking for in a wireless router. MIMO to extend your wireless signal's range and signal quality. VOIP which will save you a ton of money on phone bills and free long distance. All the latest security features from WEP to WPA-RADIUS. Like I said before to crack WPA2 you have to be an uber hacker who has tons of time and tons of Computer power to crack it. Finally QOS if you are sharing your signal with your brother who is sucking up your bandwidth buy this router and get control over it.

Please follow these steps for your D-link router setup:

Take the Ethernet cable that is connected from the modem to your Computer and unPlug it from the computer. Plug that into the WAN port of the router. If this is a new set up, and it is not connected to a PC than go from the cable modems' Ethernet port to the router's wan port. If you wish to connect to a PC, take another Ethernet cable and go from the D-link router to the port in your PC. If you are using all wireless, you do not need to do this step.

Once the connection from the cable modem to the router is connected, plug both the router and the modem back in and restart your computer. Hopefully you will see the router LED lights blinking meaning it is working and the d-link router setup is correct, as in they are speaking to each other.

After your computer is back on you will need to configure the d-link router to set up all your configurations. Open Internet Explorer or your favorite web browser, and type in the generic IP adDress of 192.168.0.1. Check your user manual it will give you the first time login details.

From here, you will want to create a username and password, as well as make sure your firmware is current. If you are using wireless, make sure to set up your SSID and be sure to create a unique name for your router. Make sure you enable encryption so people not within your household can not use your wireless.

You may want to take other measures when you do your d-link router setup such as parental control, firewall, and even if also only allow certain computers (using a MAC adDress) access to your network.
