With the growing number of unemployment, financial crisis and economic predicament in the world, the amount of people who can really afford to live a life of pleasure and abundance is dropping off dramatically. But this situation should not make anyone compromise their needs and requirements. Using high-end gadgets and devices does not necessarily entail one to have a lot of cash in their hands. The following are tips on getting a cheap, economical and inexpensive wireless router that will be your ticket and access to the World Wide Web.

Wireless routers need not be expensive. There are various kinds available in the market which offer the same amount or degree of security and protection for your computers and likewise give similar convenience provided for by the pricey ones.

If you simply need a router for your home to put up a small extension of your network, the cheapest available is the D-Link DI 524 which can be purchase for USD or less. This is a typical 802.11g wireless router generally use at home or even in individual businesses.

Another router which is efficient and easy on the pocket is the Linksys WRT54G2. It provides best performance and features for a reasonable amount of USD or less. This is the most preferred router by internet users for its security features and relatively low cost taking into account the quality of protection it can provide.

There are other cheap routers like the Netgear MR814, AirLink AR325W, US Robotics USR8054, Microsoft MN-700 Base Station and Dell TrueMobile 2300, to name a few. However, some of these brands have been pulled out from the market and were discontinued due to the rise of new models and versions. But these discontinued products can still be acquired and purchased in shops which offer second-hand devices.

To wrap up, the cost of getting a useful router device for homes and small offices need not be astronomical. The prudent way of finding a great bargain on these routers is to actually know what you need. An inexpensive router does not mean it is second-rate or of poor quality. Take into account the purpose for which you are going to utilize these gadgets. A good, simple and low cost router will customarily suffice to serve an average user intending to build a fairly small network at home. Those high-priced and costly types are not advisable to use at home. They are intended for large enterprises and businesses which require greater security features and additional aspects not necessary for home use.

New D Link Dir-827 and Dir-857: The First Wireless Routers With a USB 3.0 Port

New D Link Dir-827 and Dir-857: The First Wireless Routers With a USB 3.0 Port

Being able to share an external storage attached to the wireless router is an advanTAGe to support your multimedia wireless environMent. This is particularly advanTAGeous if your wireless router supports a built-in media server. Wireless routers with a built-in media server allow you to stream multimedia files stored in the attached storage to the Blu-Ray player, XBOX console, and Hdtv seamlessly.

Standard home wireless routers do not include a USB port, but mostly home wireless routers which fall into high performance router category are embedded with one or two ports. USB 2.0 port can deliver data rate transfer up to 480Mbps. If you have 5 or ten users or even more on your network either via wired or wireless connections access the files stored in the attached storage intensively time to time, you will experience a slow performance in accessing or transferring the files to and from the storage. This is due to the maximum data rate transfer the USB 2.0 device can deliver is up to 480Mbps. What if the router is embedded by Superspeed (aka USB-3.0) port?

Intel specifies the speed of Superspeed port as Fast up to 10 times as the speed of traditional USB 2.0 port with the data rate transfer up to 5Gbps. In CES 2011 D Link showcased two wireless routers which are embedded by Superspeed port: the Dir-827 and the Dir-857 wireless dual band routers with data rate transfer up to 2Gbps. It's not as Fast the maximum speed transfer as Superspeed port specified by Intel (5Gbps), but it is still as Fast 4 times as those traditional routers with USB 2.0 port.

Both Dir-827 and Dir-857 are true simultaneous dual band routers with USB 3.0 port but with different speed. The Dir-827 is engineered by wireless N600 technology with the speed up to 300Mbps similar to the Wndr3800 N600 router, while the Dir-857 is engineered by the wireless N750 technology with the speeds up to 450Mbps similar to the Linksys E4200 N750 router.

How do you compare Dir-827 with Linksys E4200 router? The main differences between Dir-827 and E4200 wireless routers are the speed, the USB port and the guest network. Firstly, the total bandwidth Dir-827 can deliver is up to 600Mbps (300Mbps each band) but Linksys E4200 is up to 750Mbps. Secondly, the Dir-827 includes one Superspeed port but Linksys E4200 includes traditional USB 2.0 port. Not just that, Superspeed port in Dir-827 is powered by Shareport technology to let you easily host an external storage or printer which can be accessed by users on the network. And the last but not the least, Linksys E4200 supports guest network to provide your guests internet access without compromising your private network, but D Link Dir-827 doesn't support guest network.

Except the Superspeed port compliant, the D Link Dir-827 is similar to Netgear WNDR3800 premium edition which the USB port can be used to share the storage or the printer. Is the Superspeed port in both Dir-827 and Dir-857 important for your need? You will judge, but I prefer the wireless router which includes two USB ports for hosting both storage and printer concurrently to support my "work and play" environMent.

Wireless Routers: Features of DLinks DI-634M MIMO Wireless Router

Wireless Routers: Features of DLinks DI-634M MIMO Wireless Router

If you are interested in purchasing a new wireless router you should consider DLINK's DI-634M. Many wireless routers such as the Linksys WRT54g have been on the market for many years which lack the speed and coverage of newer MIMO enabled routers.
Features:

MIMO - MIMO stands for (MULTI in MULTI out), this enables to the router to transmit and receive twice as Fast as a non- MIMO router. MIMO technology will be a part of the new 802.11n standard that is being worked out by the IEEE. MIMO technology is also in Wi -MAX routers as also. MIMO does not give your router the ability to cover vast amount of larger areas by it will improve your signal quality and speed of transmission. Still in an average size house you will be able to receive an outstanding signal any where in your home, baseMent or even the backyard with proper placeMent.

Wireless Antennas - These antennas are not just your ordinary rubber duck antennas. They are actually four antennas two vertical and two horizontal. Four antennas sending out a blazing Fast speed spread evenly on all directions.

VOIP - This router was designed to handle VOIP. Many router state that VOIP will work on their router but the DI-634M blows them away. The biggest reason to VOIP is to save a ton off your phone bill. I was paying a month through the phone company and now use VOIP and pay only . I've tried using VOIP with many other wireless routers but the bandwidth is used up.

Security - Security features for this router include:

1.MAC adDress Filtering - Limits only the Computers you want or don't want to access the network

2.WEP,WPA,WPA2 - WPA2 is the highest form of wireless security out their for wireless routers. WEP is a weaker form of security with flaw due to it's reuse of encryption keys. WPA2 rotates the keys which doesn't let the cracker hack your system.

3.TKIP - Encryption is in conjunction with WPA2, if your gamming you will wan't to use TKIP because AES does use more bandwidth.

4.AES (Advanced encryption standard) - Holy crap you need like five degrees and 30 Computers to crack this form of encryption. THe only draw back is that all users might not be compatible with it, also it does slow down the network some.

QOS- Quality of Services is all about regulation how much bandwidth each application uses. You don't want lime wire or kazzaa eating up all your bandwidth when your trying to purchase Steelers tickets. So, when you are sharing your internet connection with multiple users you can limit how much their file sharing software eats up. Also you may want to dedicate more bandwidth to gamming programs.

VPN - Setting up a VPN server to your home network or an SSH server is a must. IF you ever need to get around a firewall or proxy server you will need a remote connection. DLINks DI-634M will work with a VPN.

The DLINK DI-634M has all the features you should be looking for in a wireless router. MIMO to extend your wireless signal's range and signal quality. VOIP which will save you a ton of money on phone bills and free long distance. All the latest security features from WEP to WPA-RADIUS. Like I said before to crack WPA2 you have to be an uber hacker who has tons of time and tons of Computer power to crack it. Finally QOS if you are sharing your signal with your brother who is sucking up your bandwidth buy this router and get control over it.

Review Wireless Routers

Review Wireless Routers

For many years, it has been feasible to connect two or more Computers together using cables, so that Computer users can swap and store files share printers, share an Internet connection or other general resources.

Wireless networking is a technology that enables the wiring that connects each computer to the network to be replaced by a coded wireless signal, commonly known as a wireless router. When fitted with a wireless network card, a computer can swap data with other equally equipped computers nearby without the need to be Plugged in,thus forming a wireless network.

Wireless networks can be easily put together with only limited knowledge of computers and networking. Most wireless routers come with their own
software that will make them "Plug and play",so for many users it has simply been a matter of install and go. However, this misleading ease of use hides a number of pitfalls to do with contradictory standards, physical limitations with wireless signals, and security issues. These pitfalls can make setting up a wireless router a nightmare if the issues are not well thought-out before the wireless router is purchased.

Like a wired network, a wireless network is impartial to the operating systems used by the computers on the network. Whether you are a PC, Mac or a Linux user you will be able to connect to a wireless router if you have installed a suitable wireless card in your computer or laptop.

In the last few years, low cost wireless components have created a number of ways of linking computers together wirelessly. These networks are growing in popularity because they offer low purchase costs, almost no installation costs and they allow wireless equipped computers to be freely moved around the room, the building or even outside. The greatest advanTAGe seen by most is the loss of all the cables connecting the computer

There are 4 steps to creating a wireless network:

1.Choose your wireless router

2.Connect your wireless router

3.Configure your wireless router

4.Connect your computers

It's called a router for the simple reason that signals are being routed back and forth. The computers can be connected to the router either with a wire (called an Ethernet Cable), or without wires Most wireless routers have at least one antenna. Data from the Internet will travel through the router and then those antennas. They are then broadcast to the Wireless Adaptor on your computer or laptop. (And any other wireless adapter in range - whether its yours or not).

Types of Internet Routers - Does it Matter Which One I Buy?

Types of Internet Routers - Does it Matter Which One I Buy?

Today, the market is just flooded with choices as far as wireless routers go, and here you are in the middle of all this, trying to figure out what 802.11b/g/n means, what difference do multiple antenna make, and why similar looking routers are so differently priced. I will try to navigate you here, while keeping only your interest in mind because your need is what matters most when it comes to getting the right router. Before we begin, ask yourself these questions first:

a). There is a router & there is a modem-router (built-in DSL modem, so you can get rid of your old modem and get rid of the associated wires and power Supply, but do return it to your ISP)
b). what range & Speed you are looking for?
c). what type of equipMent are you planning to hook up right now and in the foreseeable future?
d). your budget.
e). would you have it sit on the desk or mount it on the wall/ceiling?

Alright, so here we are trying to find answer to your questions, now do keep in mind, while there are good routers and bad routers, you need to Watch out your needs, instead of looking for just the best one in the market.

what is the 802.11b/g/n?

i will not go into deep details, to keep it simple to understand, i will just give you an idea: if you are fine with a speed that will go at max 54Mbps (it's megabits, not bytes FYI), then 802.11g is good enough for you, don't bother with 802.11b, it's old tech and no longer feasible to buy, plus new routers are all backward compatible, means 802.11n will have a/b/g as well in most cases.

why i say 54Mbps "max" is because you would require a capable wireless network card in your laptop/pc, and a close enough distance to the router, the further you are from router the lesser the speed.

The 802.11n will give you a very good speed and almost longer distance coverage, while 802.11b can be as good as a cordless Ph Meters). if you can, then go for a 802.11 a/b/g/n router, meaning that you are picking latest tech. and future-proofing your investMent.

if you need to mount it or you want to have a whole lot of devices or if you are planning for a business which has a lot of employees carrying wireless devices, then go for a secure institutional router, or one that can mount on ceiling or wall.

Check the interface on a simulation website for the model you choose so that you know if you will be happy configuring and using it, most have a well designed interface but some can just go offboard.

Other Features

Firewall: you would love to have this feature, you may turn this off, but this is a must, and a good router firewall is indispensable.

Mac Filtering: This feature allows you to only have the selected devices connect to the router, so if you want to Filter all Mac adDresses other than your laptop, nothing else will be able to join that network.

Built in device support: some routers have support for a network storage, like external HDD, a print server, or flash drives.

Ethernet ports: ensure you get at least 4 ports, some routers have it missing, with just 1 port, so be aware.

Game mode: this feature allows gaming traffic to run on priority and also have games pass through firewall without spoiling your gaming mood:-)

one click configure: some would have a one click button to enable easy configure mode to enable you to hook up devices without any trouble, but this is not usually a secure way to connect.

Security support: routers come with WEP, WPA security, today you should not pick anything less than the WPA as WEP is weak and suspect to hacks and security holes. WPA2 and enterprise should be the support you should look at.

Role mode: some routers have a switch system or firmware control to function as a router, repeater, or access point, router connects wired and wireless clients, access point connects to another routers and just connects wireless clients, and a repeater would just act as a range extender to another wireless router.

Other firmware features:There are a lot of other features like parental filters, filtering out unwanted sites, listing sites you do not want to visit, or just listing sites that you only want to visit, you can in fact hook up a router in access point mode so your kids can have a separate hardware firewall conditioning traffic going to their mobile devices.

To sum it up, you need to really look at the features above and anything specif what you may need and compare with whats in the market to decide what you need and what's best for you, there is only 1 perfectness in this situation, your need, and you need to find the router matching it.

The Benefits Of Wireless Routers

The Benefits Of Wireless Routers

If you were to take a poll in your state to see how many individuals possessed a personal Computer what do you think the results may be? Quite a few years ago I had a Computer in my household - but my parents oft times used it for business and me for school projects. As children we were permitted to play certain games on it - but the Net was just becoming very popular and we were still on dial up.

Now nearly everyone in the family is given their own personal Computer. Children and parents alike will utilize them for projects and to connect with their friends. This is one of the strongest reasons why social networking websites like Twitter and Facebook are productive and taking over the whole of the Internet world!

The most difficult part about having many these machines in one house is the ability to link to one Internet connection. This is manageable! The best thing to invest in is a wireless router. These are linked directly to the modem and send a signal to each of the machines.

All you have to do is to activate the wireless card in your computer and unite it to the proper network. With this capacity you won't have to concern about running cords around the office and being confined to working in a particular room when using a laptop. Simply make sure that you find a way to secure the network so your neighbors aren't feeding off of it and slowing it all down.

The laptop computers and desktops are not the only gadgets that are able to be connected to the wireless router. You will also have the ability to link a printer. This makes it easy for you to access a docuMent and print it out without streaming lots of cords around you or even when you are in another room.

Belkin Wireless Routers

Belkin Wireless Routers

According to some internet users, Belkin wireless routers are the best of its kind and what's more, it is compatible with Windows, Mac and Even Linux. With its good speed for data transmission, ability to withstand cell phone interference, good range cover, and easy installation "what more" they ask "do we need" of a wireless router?

With there being so many wireless routers in the market, it is not easy to find one that satisfies most everyone's needs. Belkin routers however seems to be in this category with everyone I have spoken to having nothing but good to say about the Belkin routers. Some of them are happy that it provides a networking speed that is nearly five times Faster than the current wi-fi standard, while others say they that the Belkin's 54g technology is the easiest wireless network that can be impleMented as a result of which accessing files and networking with hard drives, CD-ROMs, DVDs and printers have become easier now than it ever was. Grateful mums are thrilled that parent control web content Filtering is provided free of charge for 6 months. What's more, it has an easy installation wizard that automatically detects internet settings and a self adjust router that will have you active online much sooner than you think.

In fact, the Belkin router is perfectly at home in your own home and in the small office alike. It is also quite capable of handling three of four connections at the same time without slowing down even though most home users normally use only around half of its maximum capacity. The best part is that it has more power than you'll ever need unless you are using two or three laptops at the same time, running from one to the other checking your e-mail, Watching a movie, listening to music and chatting with your friend, all at the same time. This of course would be pushing it to the limit which is not exactly what the Belkin wireless router is built for.

Considering all of the above, I feel that the Belkin router is perfect for someone who is starting a business small time which means it would have the capacity to have a laptop or two running at the same time without a problem. Although this router is ideal for the home or a small business venture, it would be too much to expect the Belkin wireless router to run a full time office network.

The next time you are looking for a router that can be used at home, for your money making project, I think you should go ahead and try the Belkin wireless router which, although a little costly, will be good value for your money where you will be able to do your online work without hassle or hindrance.

Cisco Wireless Routers Enhance Network Productivity

Cisco Wireless Routers Enhance Network Productivity

The purpose of a network router is to transfer information between business systems. It also controls other forms of access such as the Internet. Businesses of all sizes utilize wireless routers to improve productivity through more flexibility functionality. These benefits are achievable while still maintaining a secure environMent. Many times wireless devices handle high speed connections better and provide more network capabilities. EquipMent created for wireless use, reduces cabling costs as well as expenses associated with unnecessary local equipMent. Less equipment eliminates the transmission steps needed to get data from its source to the desired location.

Many benefits are obtained through the use of components like Cisco wireless routers, including a more productive and reliable network. They can transfer visual, voice, and other data types easily. Security can be enforced without the need for multiple devices. Newer manufacturer models offer the capability of supporting complicated network applications. They make it possible for remote office connections with more centralized management.

Proper router placement can assist in managing, regulating, and controlling wireless controls throughout one or many locations. The Cisco brand itself is well known for reliability, long life, and great security. Devices protect pertinent data across various business systems. They Filter firewalls to prevent unauthorized user access as well as provide effective protection from viruses. Newer devices also identify intruders when an attack is occurring to better protect against them gaining access to the enTire network.

Cisco Routers: How Can They Improve System Operations?

Cisco routers have many productivity enhancement benefits. They have three very big qualities which set them apart from a few of their competitors. Devices are of high quality, are user-friendly, and more reliable. They provide consistent network functionality throughout system use. Of course, a business in need of a reliable system must rely on pertinent factors besides reputation. What are the most important considerations when selecting a routing component to implement? Affordability, expansion capabilities, reduced maintenance, and dependability are a good place to start. While cost is consistently a deciding factor, do not forget that the lowest priced component may not offer the same dependability or functionality as ones in a comparable price range. Components which allow for later expansion save money as technology needs evolve. Any component designed to incorporate easy upgrades, installs, and maintenance will entail less long term expenses.

Devices used on the network need to be compatible to reduce complications involving connections, access, set up, and functionality. Issues like these take up valuable company time and resources. High quality devices drastically reduce the chances of improper functionality, security breaches, and an inoperative network. Cisco routers incorporate these benefits. They can be a rewarding solution for many companies. Wireless options prove to be advanTAGeous to companies with multiple locations or buildings not designed to accommodate excessive amounts of wiring. Implementation of less wired components reduces the overall infrastructure of each office location. Opportunities for enhanced technology like virtualization or remote team collaboration are also present. The benefits of wireless devices constantly increase as improvements are made to these components. They can be a sufficient choice when changes are necessary for this important piece of business technology.

High Performance Netgear Dual-Band Routers: Which One Is Best For Your Need?

High Performance Netgear Dual-Band Routers: Which One Is Best For Your Need?

Netgear has introduced several new wireless n routers since the IEEE approved the draft version of 802.11n standard. Netgear also redesigns existing routers to comply with the ratified version of 802.11n standard. Currently there are five wireless n dual band routers (one with built-in DSL modem) which are designed to meet high-performance category routers for Fastest downloads, smooth gaming and better streaming video. They are WNDR3300 dual band router; WNDR3400 N600 dual-band router; DGND3300 wireless n DSL router; WNDR3700 wireless gigabit router; and WNDR37AV wireless router for gaming and video. WNDR37AV is believed for future replaceMent for WNDR3700 router.

3700 and 37AV routers are almost similar except that 37AV supports Windows 7, Live parental control, and DLNA compliant. DGND3300 is designed with built-in ADSL modem - a single solution for home wireless network environMent. Now let's have a look the comparison between the three routers 3300, 3400, and 37AV.

Wireless Standards

All the three wireless routers are designed with simultaneous wireless -n dual-band to work with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. All routers are compliant with wireless a/b/g/n devices. With dual-band, the system provides double bandwidth for Faster speed.

LAN / WAN Interface

All the three wireless routers are embedded with 4xRJ-45 LAN port and 1x WAN Ethernet port but only 37AV router is embedded with Gigabit ports for both LAN and WAN interfaces. All ports are Ethernet with auto-sensing, means the port can detect the network cable either cross or straight-through type and can adjust the signal automatically to match the cable type accordingly. You don't need to worry in selecting the cable type; both cross and straight-through cable can work.

USB Port

Both 37AV and 3400 routers are embedded with the USB port which can be used as the storage server. Netgear with ReadyShare technology provides Fast and easy shared access to an external USB storage device. 37AV features a DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) Media Server allows you stream video and music from a USB drive to media players, DLNA TVs, and any other DLNA compliant devices without the need to turn on the PC.

WNDR3300 wireless router does not include the USB port. This is one of the con sides of this router compared to other WNDR37AV and WNDR3400 routers.

The disadvanTAGe of the three routers regarding the USB port is that they do not support the USB Printer for sharing. If you require the routers that support USB printer for sharing, you can consider the new Belkin including Share, Play, and Max Play wireless routers. Or you can consider the TEW-673GRU wireless router by Trendnet. TEW-673GRU is an all-in-one solution for wireless router, storage, and print server.

Advanced Security

All the 3300, 3400, and 37AV routers support the latest wireless encryption Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2 - PSK) and WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection) for connecting to legacy wireless clients. For network protection, NAT & SPI firewall and VPN pass-through for secure tunneling are also included.

The 'free live parental control' and 'guest access' are the distinct security features for 3400 and 37AV compared to 3300. 3300 doesn't support the guest access and free live parental control. With guest access, you can create specific SSID for guest separate from your private network. With live parental control, you can block bad sites for your kids and you can manage remotely from anywhere.

System Requirement

All the routers support Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS, UNIX, or Linux. WNDR3400 and WNDR37AV also support Windows 7, but WNDR3300 does not. Other requirements are the same.

Netgear Green Technology

Except 3300, both WNDR3400 and 37AV support Netgear Green technology. With green technology, the routers are designed with eco-friendly to help conserve the energy including power/wireless on/off buttons, 80% recycled packaging, energy star compliant power adapter etc.

Both the prices of WNDR3300 and 3400 are under currently, but for 37AV currently the price is around 0. Now which one do you need for your home wireless environment? Unless you require high-performance environment for video streaming and gaming more enjoyable and you also require Gigabit for Fastest wired connection, you can consider WNDR3400 which is around 70% cheaper than 37AV. Otherwise, consider 37AV wireless n dual-band router.

How to Choose Wireless Routers

How to Choose Wireless Routers

When shopping for wireless routers, it is easy for one to get confused given that most wireless routers appear similar upon first glance. In actual sense all the wireless routers that are in the market differs from the other in terms of features. However, most buyers often find it challenging to make the right decision in respect to selecting the most appropriate router. It is for this reason that the article seeks to offer pointers on how to go about choosing the right wireless router.

Tips and guidelines

The following are features that you need to look out for when in the market for wireless routers;

Speed: The speed of your router will determine how Fast you can upload and download information and share the same on your local area network. A majority of wireless router manufacturers advertise the speeds of their brands in megabits per second, i.e. Mbps. Modern routers have speeds that can reach 300 Mbps while old routers have speeds that range from 11 Mbps to 54 Mbps. However, whereas most consumers will tend to hinge towards wireless routers that have optimum speeds, it is important to realize that the actual speeds that you will receive could be slightly lower than what is on the box label. In addition, you may have a Fast router but lower internet bandwidth. As such, when choosing a wireless router make certain that you have the assistance of a professional who will help you in saving when making your purchase.

Model: There is the tendency to lean to market leading brands given that most people are inclined to them. This could be because of the use of modern technology in the router which ensures fast uploads and downloads speeds. Nonetheless, it should also be noted that popularity of a brand does not translate to better performances. The internet can assist you in knowing which the best market brands are.

Warranty: Check that the model and brand that you are purchasing offers warranty. This tends to be the trend with most manufacturers. Nevertheless, each manufacturer has different terms and conditions that relates to the warranty. When the warranty period is longer it goes on to show that the product you are using is of quality. Warranties that tend to disadvanTAGe the customer only show that what you are about to purchase is questionable.

Last but not least, what you will purchase will hinge on how much you are willing to spend.

How to Use a Video Phone With DSL Internet and Routers

How to Use a Video Phone With DSL Internet and Routers

Video Phones are increasing their presence in the market because high speed Internet connections are now common, and Fast enough to support voice and video traffic.  T1, fiber optic, or cable-based Internet usually has enough "upload" bandwidth to provide good results with a video phone, as long as there are not too many active users on the network.  DSL, on the other hand, often has a low enough upstream bandwidth to cause concern that it will affect video phone performance.

If you have DSL, or an actively used cable or other network, you may experience some voice and video difficulties.  There is a two-router, two-part approach that can help this problem.  The first part is to guarantee your video phone a 50% share of the bandwidth pie.  In order to do that, the device that your DSL telephone cable connects to has to be a router, or "home gateway".  It must NOT be wireless, or if it is, the wireless function should be shut off.  If you have a DSL MODEM, only one connection is available.  Use Ebay to buy a used Netopia Cayman or similar DSL router, and then sell your DSL modem on Ebay.  You can get telephone support to help you set up the new router with the login and password for the PPP.

Two devices are connected to the DSL router:  The video phone, and the cable leading to the SECOND router, which acts as a home gateway, and may be wireless.

The first router divides the bandwidth in half, and makes sure that at least half of it goes to the video phone.  The second router can also add to the performance.  The secret is to buy a router with QoS.  Such a router is the ubiquitous WRT54G.  It allows you to set the upstream bandwidth.  While routers can't control how Fast data comes to them, they CAN control how fast they send it out.  By adjusting the bandwidth on the upstream side, you limit the amount of data that the router can possibly use out of the restrictive upload bandwidth.  Enable the QoS, set the upstream bandwidth to manual, and enter the value.

Lowering this level too low may not be necessary.  If you have measured upload speed of 390 from speakeasy, try setting the router to 256.  The more you lower the upstream bandwidth, the better chance your video phone has of maintaining a good quality video call, but lower it no more than necessary.

There is a cost to this.  Whenever you are sending data, such as uploading docuMents or pictures to be emailed, you are suffering a slower speed than what you are paying for.  However, if that is a big problem for you, perhaps a second DSL, or  a change to cable Internet is called for.  Or, perhaps you can schedule this activity, and Plug your Computer temporarily into the DSL router, which isn't speed limited.

I offer two final thoughts.  First, your video phone will have settings for connection speed.  This allows the phone to work better with the speed it has available.  Make sure you set these.  They should be in the Menu system.  Second, not everyone will understand your strategy.  Open ports have a way of filling up.  Check your system periodically to be sure that there are still only two cables connected to your DSL router LAN.

Common Problems With Wireless Routers

Common Problems With Wireless Routers

The internet is so important and well integrated into people's lives that going without it is unthinkable. This is why wireless router problems are some of the most frustrating Computer problems around. This article discusses some of the more common wireless problems and should enable you to get up and running as quickly as possible

Do I need a special code to connect my wireless router to a Time Warner modem?

Not at all. There is no special "code" that I'm aware of. All modern cable modems are Plug and play (PnP) straight from the box and programmed to work with all modern broadband routers. You'll probably have to tweak a couple of settings on your router for optimal performance but that should be it.

How do I reset my router?

The best way is to hold down the reset button for 15 seconds with the power on, which should cause all the lights to flash thus indicating a reset. Sometimes this button is really small so you might to use a sharp pencil.

Can wireless routers cause problems with a digital TV antenna?

Digital TVs and WiFi bands are on very different bands (~450MHz - 650MHz) vs (2.4GHz or 5.0GHz for WiFi) so they should not interfere with one and other. That said, if the wireless router is close to the TV antenna then it could overload the digital TV and cause your TV reception to go all fuzzy. To be sure, move them 10 feet apart this should sort the problem.

In my wireless router settings I have a noise (dB) rating. What is this and when does it become a problem?

This refers to the amount of interference when your wireless signal is transmitted from your router to your Computer. The lower this figure is the better. Ideally, all noise levels should be 0dB but that is never going to happen. A router can broadcast a signal with up 70dB of noise and still perform without a problem.

Noise can be causes by electromagnetic fields in close proximity to the router. One way of lowering this is to disconnect all the ringer wires from your telephone sockets, breaking the electromagnetic field they create. Modem telephones don't' require the ringer line to be connected to ring so this won't affect the phone at all.

Wireless Network Routers Enhance Productivity

Wireless Network Routers Enhance Productivity

Networking hardware or equipMent refer to the tools used for making networks work such as routers, cables, hubs, switches, access points, data cards, bridges, ISDN adapters and firewalls.

There was a time when Computers were introduced and there after came the concept of networking to get the most of the amazing functionality that the machine has. In no time the World Wide Web grew connecting people irrespective of the physical boundaries. Since the time internet technology has emerged the way it has, there are several devices that have been seen in the market that are assisting the use of the internet in various ways. Wireless Network Routers top the list. As the name suggests it is a devise that is used to connect Computers without the use of wires.

Initially we had wired network connectivity only, it still persists but people have stopped preferring it over wireless network connectivity. The reason is simple; the latter is a better means of connecting Computers, laptops and other console devices together. For wired connectivity there are so many things that you need to set up a successful network over and above the expertise that you need for the technical aspects of a wireless network. You need endless wires, hubs, Plugs etc to bring a network to existence. Then there would be the "ip adDresses" that would need configuration and so on and so forth. Considering all that hassle Wireless Network Routers help you with a hassle free network set up and are more efficient any day of the week. The connectivity is better, the speed is amazing and you don't have wires to limit your mobility.

Wireless Network Routers are very easy to fix. Depending upon the kind of need that you have you could chose accordingly from the market for the best and efficient results. No one router could be labeled as the best as there are so many brands out there in the market, all of which are top notch. You have to look at your wireless network needs to make sure that you get a router that will give you the desired results. Like for example, you know that there are people around that are threats to the security of your wireless network. In that case you should be going for a wireless router that has rich security features to keep these people from breaking into your network.

The other thing that would play a contributing role in selecting the proper wireless router and making it efficient is the number of computers that you would be connecting to the router. Depending upon the number of computers you wish to put on the network you need to careful in selecting a router. If you are not thinking of expansion and have 4 computers on a router which could support 12, then this is not using your wireless router efficiently. Consider your present and realistic future needs while selecting a router.

You could make your Wireless Network Routers even more efficient by considering the speed requireMents that you have. In case you are using the internet because you are an avid online gamer, needless to say that the speed would be a concern. However, if you are content with the average speed that it comes with, you really don't have to buy a very expensive router just because it offers better speeds.

Clearly, it's about matching your particular needs to that of the features of the router that you are selecting. This is a winning combination and would give you the most efficient wireless router.

Wireless Routers: 10 1/2 Tips to Troubleshoot

Wireless Routers: 10 1/2 Tips to Troubleshoot

Wireless Router trouble shooting for the Famously Frustrated

1. Open up internet explorer type in [http://192.168.1.1] under password type admin1 and proceed to your router interface. Most people don’t even know how to go to their router interface. Linksys wireless routers all have default passwords of admin1 or admin. Your wireless routers interface is where your enTire configuration takes place. If you don’t know your routers default password just go to google and type in your routers model number and “Default password” some website will have it.

2. Reset your router – Some times after many changes and many restarts your routers configuration files can get messed up. Even after you many changes via your routers web interface they won’t stick. Wireless Routers Buying Guide

Wireless Routers Buying Guide

Router Functionalities

Firewall

Firewalls are ideal for home networks. They help in protecting home use Computers by stalling the destructive efforts of other official websites and potential hackers. This software or hardware device Filters the information coming through the internet connection, flagging the information that is not to be allowed through. You can find some such models at:

VPN Pass through

VPN pass through feature of routers allows traffic between the endpoints and does not support one of the endpoints. This feature is ideal for routers of home use or small office setups; they are less expensive than a router with full VPN that supports the endpoints.

DHCP server

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers can be impleMented for windows based system. The server automatically assigns an IP adDress to the Computer's TCP/IP stack software.

Wireless Access Point

The performance of your network will depend on signal strength of the wireless access point. Before you position it, find out the exact location from where it will give the maximum network range.

DSL Modem

Digital Subscriber Line modems are Faster than regular modems and can use the existing phone lines. Both internet connection and phone lines for telephone calls can be used simultaneously.

Voice over IP gateway

VoIP routers have both wireless networking feature and telephone terminal adapters. With this feature the network can access both Internet and voice communications.

Protocols

These are formats for transferring data between the various devices. The protocols determine the various aspects of the data like compression types, delivery and retrieval by devices and error checking. The standard protocols differ in their various features, so in order to communicate with other computers correct protocols must be selected.

Internet Protocol (IP) enables unique adDressing for computers.

When used with transport control protocol, it is referred as TCP/IP.

The newer IP version 6 is referred as IPv6. This version adDresses 16 bytes in length.
DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol assigns dynamic IP addresses to devices on a network.

Routing Protocols

The information packets have to be routed by a series of routers to get to its destination. Latest routers automatically exchange route information with other routers through the use of routing protocols.

While configuring the router on your own, you have to choose what types of routing protocol you have to install and configure.

RIP version-1: It is a dynamic protocol and automatically figures routing tables on its own, thus manual inputs are not required.

Encryption Standards

This feature configures the virtual private network, encryption hardware advanced integration modules and the network modules.

Data Encryption Standard - applies 56-bit key to 64-bit block of data. This is the most commonly used encryption standard. A single key is used which is very difficult to break.

Triple DES (3DES) - applies 3 keys in succession making it more difficult to break the code.

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) will be the next encryption standard for commercial transactions in the private sector.

MD5

SHA 1

Modulation

There are many standards of modulation. The most commonly used types are:

QAM: Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, a dominant modulation technique for high speed digital signals.

CCK: CompliMentary Code Keying is a modulation scheme to operate in data speeds up to 11Mbps in the RF band.

OFDM: Orthogonal Frequency division multiplexing modulation is used for even higher speeds of 54Mbps.

DSSS: Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum use wideband signals that are not easy to detect and resists jamming attempts.
Security

Today no home and office network is secure. To counter the hacking efforts of hackers, look for good built-in security functionalities. These will ensure that your system doesn't slow down, those within the range of your wireless are not able to view your files, emails, instant messages, usernames and passwords. Depending on the security features you can also block spams, illegal activities with your internet connection and prevent loading of dangerous software.

This however doesn't mean your network is completely secure.

Some steps that can be taken are:

Enable WEP, wired equivalent privacy encryption provides security to WLANS. The WEP keys encrypt the data stream.

Turning on WPA encryption. The Wi-Fi protected access adds on the authentication and encryption features WEP explained above.

TKIP, Temporal Key Integrity Protocol covers up for the encryption weaknesses of WEP.
WPA2 protection is the latest one and provides high level of protection.
Enable wireless MAC Address Filtering.

WEP Encryption length

The WEP encryption is based on a combination of secret user keys and system generated values. The key encrypts and de-encrypts the data that is transferred between the access points and the clients. There are two versions:
The earlier version supported 40-bit encryption; the key length was 40 bits and 24 additional bits of system generated data, thus a total of 64 bits.
Easy decoding of 40 bit WEP encryption encouraged vendors to go in for 128-bit encryption. 128-bit encryption has a key length of 104 bits.

Antenna Type

The omni directional antenna of routers broadcast 360degrees around the router. Position them in such a way that you can make the most of the radiating signals.

External antennas can add strength significantly, thus giving a wider range and increased network performance when compared with the performance of in-built antennas.

Detachable antennas disable 802.11a lower band communications when detached. On attaching the antenna the lower band is enabled. Thus they can be screwed into the device and can be upgraded easily.

The third type is the internal integrated antennas. These antennas are built-in, and hence cannot be changed or directed.

Brand Name

Wireless routers are still evolving, and at this Infant sTAGe it will do good to stick to one brand. Switching between brands can lead to compatibility problems. Linksys and Netgear wireless routers are among the few companies that have the highest wireless router ratings a company can get.

Linksys

Linksys wireless routers are easy to install and are reputed to give good performance and signal range. The various features that the router supports are protection from hackers with NAT technology, VPN pass through, and can encrypt all wireless transmissions. Most of its models have excellent performance and extremely useful support features. Some of the features are the firewall and routing capabilities, MAC address filtering and virtual server support. Most of the models are easy to configure with the browser-based configuration.

Netgear

Netgear wireless routers have not only superior looks but also good signal strength and wider range. Security features are good and are taken care of with WPA-PSK, WEP (128-bit). Netgear markets wide range of wireless routers for home networking as well as business networking. The selling factors are ease of use, reliability, quality and security.

Apple

Customers loyal to this brand can go in for wireless routers of this brand; they are however priced higher than models of other brands with similar features. Security and support features are good.

Cisco 2811 Routers For Small to Medium Businesses

Cisco 2811 Routers For Small to Medium Businesses

The Cisco 2811 integrated services router is being searched heavily in India and in the United States. How can this be? This Cisco router, classified as a Cisco 2800 series router, has been around for years. What factors are contributing to its increase in popularity? This question could be answered in many ways even only having such limited information on this device.

Possible reasons for the popularity increase:

A promotion or special is being offered through an email campaign from Cisco directly. More businesses already were using the Cisco 2811, and find it to be a reliable router over other brands and series. To be more direct, they are looking for replaceMents or expanding their networks. Network resellers and wholesalers on the B2B end are finding the Cisco 2811 router harder to acquire for resale.

Why would small and medium-sized businesses choose the Cisco 2811 to incorporate in their network?

Attributing to the possible popularity increase, this Cisco router has been around for awhile and has earned a good reputation through various B2B channels, forum postings, paid ads, promotions, press releases and word of mouth. I'm even taking the time to write about this odd occurrence in popularity. Here are some features of the Cisco 2811 router that may be being some buzz back to this Cisco series router:

For router security, the device supports up to 1500 VPN tunnels with the AIM-EPII-PLUS module, has antivirus defense support through the NAC, and acts as a intrusion detection system as well as a Cisco firewall. On the voice site of the router, there is analog and digital voice call support, optional voicemail support and optional CME and SRST support for up to 36 IP phones for local call processing. Basic features include support for over 90 existing and new modules, two integrated 10/100 Fast ethernet ports and optional layer 2 switch support with Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Does Cisco still support the Cisco 2811?

Yes, the Cisco 2811 has not reached its end-of-life date according to their company website. When Cisco ends the life of a product, they usually will remove most information on the device to force you into a different solution. A company should put most of its resources into networking devices that meet today's expectations. Therefore, it makes sense when they do issue a end-of-life placeMent.

I'm a business owner but I have no idea how to operate a Cisco router

I would search local classified sites like Craigslist to find an experienced networker. You can also ask the opinion on device setup and support from where you buy the Cisco 2811. If it is in your budget and you are growing, I would hire a CCNA professional to manage your network. A CCNA is the most basic level of certification from Cisco, and validates they have basic networking knowledge for Cisco networking.

Different Cisco router bundles that exist

I know this is a given, but make sure your network is powered by AC or DC. Picking up the wrong package will waste you time and money.

Cisco2811 - Integrated services router with AC power, 2FE, 1 NME, 4 HWICs, 2 PVDM slots, 2 AIMs, and Cisco IOS IP Base Software Cisco2811-AC-IP - Integrated services router with AC power including power over ethernet distribution capability, 2FE, 1 NME, 4 HWICs, 2 PVDM slots, 2 AIMs, and Cisco IOS IP Base Software Cisco2811-DC - Integrated services router with DC power, 2FE, 1 NME, 4 HWICs, 2 PVDM slots, 2 AIMs, and Cisco IOS IP Base Software
