The first step is to subscribe to a satellite internet service. Connect Your Xbox 360 to the Internet - Wired LAN, Wireless Wi-Fi, or Internet Connection Sharing


Microsoft wants the Xbox 360 to be the center of your living room where you can do all sorts of things with your Hdtv such as play the hottest new games with advanced graphics engines and Watch HD video content. You can use the gaming console to access files in PCs as long as you let it join the same network the other Computers are in.

Xbox 360 has plenty of Internet features including Xbox LIVE which is basically a network of millions of gamers around the world that want to play cooperatively or competitively while sharing achieveMents, scores, and even downloadable titles. There are three ways you can connect to the Internet.

Wired Connection

1. Take an Ethernet cable and Plug it in the back of the Xbox 360. Plug the other end of the cable to an available jack on the router or directly to a modem if you do not have a router.

2. Turn on your Xbox 360 and go to "My Xbox." choose "System Settings" and go to "Network Settings." Choose the "Text Xbox LIVE Connection" option and choose "Yes" to allow the service to update your console's software. If this finishes successfully, you should have no problems with using the Internet.

Wireless Connection

1. For old Xbox 360 owners, connect the Wireless Networking Adapter to the console. Skip this step if you have the slimmer Xbox 360 model and want to connect wirelessly.

2. Head to the "System Settings" option from the "My Xbox" screen and then go to "Network Settings." Find the network name that matches the router with Internet access that you wish to connect to. Ask the person who set up the wireless router if you are unsure which one you need to connect to. If you cannot find the name, select "Specify Unlisted Network" and type in the name yourself. The person who set up the router should know the name.

3. Input the wireless network password if prompted. You also need to contact the administrator or individual that set up the router if you do not know the password.

4. Wait for the Xbox 360 to connect to the Internet and choose the "Yes" option to allow the console to download the latest update from Microsoft's servers. You should end up in Xbox LIVE afterwards which shows that your Internet properly works.

Internet Connection Sharing

1. Turn on the Computer or laptop that is using the Internet so you can share the connection with your Xbox 360. Click the Start Menu type "Ncpa.cpl" on the search box. Type this in the "Run" dialog if you are using Windows XP.

2. Right-click the connection icon that is hooked up to your router (usually the wireless connection). Click the "Sharing" tab and tick the first two checkboxes.

3. Now that your wireless connection is actively sharing, Plug your Xbox 360 into the vacant Ethernet jack.

4. Go to "My Xbox" on your Xbox 360 console and go to "System Settings" followed by "Network Settings." Choose "Wired Network" if prompted and then go to "Additional Settings". Choose "Restore to Factory defaults" and choose "Test Xbox LIVE Connection" to see if you have Internet connectivity.

In part 1 of this series on IP adDresses in wireless internet CCTV, I looked at how most home networks share a small number of identical IP adDresses, so your neighbour's laptop could easily have precisely the same address as your own laptop or your internet CCTV camera! Here in part 2, I'm going to show why these duplicate addresses don't cause chaos when messages are sent across the internet.

Let's use an example to show how devices can communicate successfully even if they share the same address. Say your laptop has an IP address of 192.168.1.5 and your wireless internet CCTV camera has an address of 192.168.1.101. Let's also say that your neighbour's laptop has, by coincidence, the same address as your laptop: 192.168.1.5. Before we go any further, you may be thinking that the odds of this are infinitesimally low. Well, actually they are not. This is because most home networks have IP addresses that tend to be in the same few ranges, often from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.255 or from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255.

Back to our example, this means that when your neighbour tries to connect to your wireless internet CCTV camera (assuming you have given him the password), we would have a problem if only the home networks' IP addresses were used, because your neighbour's laptop on 192.168.1.5 would send a message to your camera at 192.168.1.101, but when the camera replies, would the reply go to back to your neighbour's laptop on 192.168.1.5, or your laptop on 192.168.1.5, or someone else's Computer somewhere else in the world that also happens to have a 192.168.1.5 address? Clearly this would not work, and that's why the internet has its own set of IP addresses that are universally unique. Continuing the above example, when your neighbour's laptop at 192.68.1.5 in his network sends a message to your internet camera, first of all the message will reach his router, which wraps it up so it is labelled with your neighbour's single unique internet IP address, say 74.125.45.100, and sends it to your network's unique internet address, say 209.191.93.53. Note that the household or "internal" address of your neighbour's laptop, 192.168.1.5, is never sent across the internet at all. Now, when the message reaches your house, more specifically your router, the router hands it to your wireless internet camera. In this way, home networks throughout the world can reuse the same IP addresses.

There is something missing from this explanation that you may have spotted. How does your router "know" that a message coming in is for your internet CCTV camera, if that camera's IP address of 192.168.1.101 is not sent in the message? The answer is that your camera is allocated a "port" number, which is sent with the message. So your neighbour, when logging into your camera, would type not just your internet IP address of 209.191.93.53 into his browser address bar, but rather 209.191.93.53:8765, where 8765 is the port number allocated to your camera. Your router would need to be set up to know that any message coming in with a port number of 8765 is to be "forwarded" to the camera. This is what we know as "port forwarding", which is really outside the scope of this article.

IP address theory is a complex business, but when it comes to working with wireless internet CCTV, you only need to know the basics, and hopefully this series of articles has helped to achieve that.

Today, the market is just flooded with choices as far as wireless routers go, and here you are in the middle of all this, trying to figure out what 802.11b/g/n means, what difference do multiple antenna make, and why similar looking routers are so differently priced. I will try to navigate you here, while keeping only your interest in mind because your need is what matters most when it comes to getting the right router. Before we begin, ask yourself these questions first:

a). There is a router & there is a modem-router (built-in DSL modem, so you can get rid of your old modem and get rid of the associated wires and power Supply, but do return it to your ISP)
b). what range & Speed you are looking for?
c). what type of equipMent are you planning to hook up right now and in the foreseeable future?
d). your budget.
e). would you have it sit on the desk or mount it on the wall/ceiling?

Alright, so here we are trying to find answer to your questions, now do keep in mind, while there are good routers and bad routers, you need to Watch out your needs, instead of looking for just the best one in the market.

what is the 802.11b/g/n?

i will not go into deep details, to keep it simple to understand, i will just give you an idea: if you are fine with a speed that will go at max 54Mbps (it's megabits, not bytes FYI), then 802.11g is good enough for you, don't bother with 802.11b, it's old tech and no longer feasible to buy, plus new routers are all backward compatible, means 802.11n will have a/b/g as well in most cases.

why i say 54Mbps "max" is because you would require a capable wireless network card in your laptop/pc, and a close enough distance to the router, the further you are from router the lesser the speed.

The 802.11n will give you a very good speed and almost longer distance coverage, while 802.11b can be as good as a cordless Ph Meters). if you can, then go for a 802.11 a/b/g/n router, meaning that you are picking latest tech. and future-proofing your investMent.

if you need to mount it or you want to have a whole lot of devices or if you are planning for a business which has a lot of employees carrying wireless devices, then go for a secure institutional router, or one that can mount on ceiling or wall.

Check the interface on a simulation website for the model you choose so that you know if you will be happy configuring and using it, most have a well designed interface but some can just go offboard.

Other Features

Firewall: you would love to have this feature, you may turn this off, but this is a must, and a good router firewall is indispensable.

Mac Filtering: This feature allows you to only have the selected devices connect to the router, so if you want to Filter all Mac adDresses other than your laptop, nothing else will be able to join that network.

Built in device support: some routers have support for a network storage, like external HDD, a print server, or flash drives.

Ethernet ports: ensure you get at least 4 ports, some routers have it missing, with just 1 port, so be aware.

Game mode: this feature allows gaming traffic to run on priority and also have games pass through firewall without spoiling your gaming mood:-)

one click configure: some would have a one click button to enable easy configure mode to enable you to hook up devices without any trouble, but this is not usually a secure way to connect.

Security support: routers come with WEP, WPA security, today you should not pick anything less than the WPA as WEP is weak and suspect to hacks and security holes. WPA2 and enterprise should be the support you should look at.

Role mode: some routers have a switch system or firmware control to function as a router, repeater, or access point, router connects wired and wireless clients, access point connects to another routers and just connects wireless clients, and a repeater would just act as a range extender to another wireless router.

Other firmware features:There are a lot of other features like parental filters, filtering out unwanted sites, listing sites you do not want to visit, or just listing sites that you only want to visit, you can in fact hook up a router in access point mode so your kids can have a separate hardware firewall conditioning traffic going to their mobile devices.

To sum it up, you need to really look at the features above and anything specif what you may need and compare with whats in the market to decide what you need and what's best for you, there is only 1 perfectness in this situation, your need, and you need to find the router matching it.

Video Phones are increasing their presence in the market because high speed Internet connections are now common, and Fast enough to support voice and video traffic.  T1, fiber optic, or cable-based Internet usually has enough "upload" bandwidth to provide good results with a video phone, as long as there are not too many active users on the network.  DSL, on the other hand, often has a low enough upstream bandwidth to cause concern that it will affect video phone performance.

If you have DSL, or an actively used cable or other network, you may experience some voice and video difficulties.  There is a two-router, two-part approach that can help this problem.  The first part is to guarantee your video phone a 50% share of the bandwidth pie.  In order to do that, the device that your DSL telephone cable connects to has to be a router, or "home gateway".  It must NOT be wireless, or if it is, the wireless function should be shut off.  If you have a DSL MODEM, only one connection is available.  Use Ebay to buy a used Netopia Cayman or similar DSL router, and then sell your DSL modem on Ebay.  You can get telephone support to help you set up the new router with the login and password for the PPP. 

Two devices are connected to the DSL router:  The video phone, and the cable leading to the SECOND router, which acts as a home gateway, and may be wireless.

The first router divides the bandwidth in half, and makes sure that at least half of it goes to the video phone.  The second router can also add to the performance.  The secret is to buy a router with QoS.  Such a router is the ubiquitous WRT54G.  It allows you to set the upstream bandwidth.  While routers can't control how Fast data comes to them, they CAN control how fast they send it out.  By adjusting the bandwidth on the upstream side, you limit the amount of data that the router can possibly use out of the restrictive upload bandwidth.  Enable the QoS, set the upstream bandwidth to manual, and enter the value.

Lowering this level too low may not be necessary.  If you have measured upload speed of 390 from speakeasy, try setting the router to 256.  The more you lower the upstream bandwidth, the better chance your video phone has of maintaining a good quality video call, but lower it no more than necessary.

There is a cost to this.  Whenever you are sending data, such as uploading docuMents or pictures to be emailed, you are suffering a slower speed than what you are paying for.  However, if that is a big problem for you, perhaps a second DSL, or  a change to cable Internet is called for.  Or, perhaps you can schedule this activity, and Plug your Computer temporarily into the DSL router, which isn't speed limited.

I offer two final thoughts.  First, your video phone will have settings for connection speed.  This allows the phone to work better with the speed it has available.  Make sure you set these.  They should be in the Menu system.  Second, not everyone will understand your strategy.  Open ports have a way of filling up.  Check your system periodically to be sure that there are still only two cables connected to your DSL router LAN.

Wireless Internet CCTV, also known as IP CCTV, is the modern replaceMent for old analogue CCTV cameras and has the great advanTAGe that you can see your property, live, from wherever you happen to be, using the internet. Now that the technology has become popular in homes and businesses, people need to know how to get the best out of it. In this article, I want to look at the minimum set of features that a router needs in order to be used successfully with wireless CCTV.

First, a quick note about types of broadband and router compatibility. Your broadband service is likely to come through your phone line or perhaps via a satellite CCTV box. If it's through a phone line, you will need an ADSL modem/router, sometimes called a DSL modem/router. The modem part of the box is what talks to the phone line. On the other hand, if you have broadband from your cable supplier, you need a cable router. This is not the cable box itself, but another box that Plugs into your cable box. The router part of a cable router or a DSL modem/router is usually the same, with many manufacturers making cable and DSL versions of what is essentially a router with the same features. Now, let's take a look at the features you will need to get the most out of your wireless internet CCTV system:

Virtual Server/Port Forwarding. This just means having the ability to set up the router so that a special code known as a port number is allocated to the camera. When you open an internet browser window and type in the URL or adDress of the camera, you add this special port number onto the end of the adDress, (e.g. for port 8765, you would type "http://theadDress:8765" where "theadDress" is the internet IP address or URL of your network). When the router sees the port number it knows the message is to be passed to the camera. Without this facility, you would not be able to see your property over the internet. DDNS Support. It stands for Dynamic DNS and is used where the address of your home or business on the broadband system, known as the IP address, is changed at will by the broadband supplier. Most DSL broadband services have changing IP addresses, also known as dynamic IP addresses. Say you have an IP address of 91.103.218.59 (they tend to look like this) today, with dynamic IP addressing it could be something different tomorrow. This means you would never know what address to use to access your camera over the internet, and that is where DDNS support comes in. Basically, you use a third Party service to link a domain name to an IP address. This service is provided by a separate DDNS provider and can be free, e.g. dyndns.com. The router's DDNS feature means that the router makes sure it always tells the DDNS provider what your current broadband IP address is. Therefore, even if the IP address changes, you can always contact your camera by using the same dyndns address, e.g. "http://mycamera.dyndns.com:8765". Keep alive or auto-reconnect feature. This feature is all about making sure the router stays connected. You may have a power cut, or the DSL line/ cable connection may drop for a few moMents. In these scenarios, you want the router to sort itself out. Earlier models of home router did not handle this well, and even today some can still be bought that don't reconnect after a power cut or especially a broadband fault. The last thing you want is to go on holiday and then find you cannot log into your camera because a power cut several days ago left the router disconnected, so this is important. Encryption. Most routers these days offer some sort of encryption, usually known as WEP or WPA. WPA is stronger and preferable. Encryption is simply encoding the messages on your wireless network so that they cannot be intercepted easily. Make sure you get a router that offers at least one type of encryption that your wireless internet CCTV cameras offer. For example, it is no good getting a router which only does WPA encryption if your cameras can only do WEP.

It seems there were thousands of Dollars put into this network and probably only a hundred Dollars more spent on a better router would have eliminated our problem and the cost of many unproductive work hours. I forget the levels ratings for routers now, but check with your tech or provider. It's the little things that get us sometimes, huh?

Depending on your router's settings you may have to connect to the router with an Ethernet cord to access the router's settings. To do this, securely connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the Computer and the Ethernet port on the router.

Often when people change the default username and passwords on their router, they end up forgetting them. It's a good idea to take some masking tape and write your username and password on your router so you can easily find it. If you have forgotten your login information you will need to reset your router's settings.

To reset the router locate the reset button which is usually a small hole on the rear of the unit. Use a paperclip to press the reset button and hold it down for 10 seconds. After you release the button the router will reset.

If you have access to the network but not the internet check the status of the router's lights. Check to see if the internet light on the modem is indicating the correct status. If it isn't, check that the internet modem has access to the internet and check to see if the network cable is securely attached to the Ethernet ports between the router and the modem.

If you cannot get internet access you'll need to manually set some of the router's settings. You may need to contact your internet service provider for these settings. If the status light on the router indicates that it has an internet connection, check any firewalls on your Computer that may cause interference to/from the internet and make sure they're setup properly.
